Procedures

  • Colonoscopy. Examination of the colon and rectum for cancer screening, polyp removal, rectal bleeding and changes in bowel habits.
  • Upper endoscopy (EGD). Examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum for reflux, ulcers, swallowing difficulty and upper abdominal pain.
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy. A shorter examination of the rectum and the lower third of the colon, used for screening and for lower bowel symptoms.
  • Hemorrhoid banding. Rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids, done without cutting and without a hospital stay.
  • Esophageal testing and dilation. Assessment and widening of a narrowed esophagus, one of several reasons food can catch on the way down.

Conditions We Treat

  • Gastroesophageal reflux. Persistent heartburn, regurgitation and the throat symptoms that come with it.
  • Diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Pouches in the colon wall, which are usually silent, and the pain, bleeding or inflammation that follows when one becomes inflamed.
  • Rectal bleeding. This always needs investigating, because the causes run from hemorrhoids through polyps to colorectal cancer.
  • Hemorrhoids. Swollen anal cushions causing itching, discomfort, protrusion and bleeding.

Anand Gupta, MD, FACG is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in gastroenterology and has performed over 40,000 endoscopic procedures. He trained in internal medicine at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, with extensive therapeutic endoscopy training. Where Patients Come From

The practice sits at 1003 Dupont Square North in St. Matthews and draws from both sides of the Ohio River. Patients come from across Jefferson County, including Jeffersontown, Prospect and Middletown, and from New Albany, Jeffersonville and Clarksville in Southern Indiana. Because Dr. Gupta holds a license in both states and the practice bills Medicare along with Kentucky and Indiana Medicaid, Indiana residents are not sent back across the river for coverage reasons.
